As the railroad runs through many crowded residential areas in the five inner districts, many sections are consistently affected by serious traffic congestion.

The area has also become a dumping ground for local people, despite warnings and fines from local authorities.

Many people even encroached onto the rail corridor to grow vegetables or use the space. In some sections, they have pulled down the fencing to make it easier to cross.

HCM City authorities proposed to the Ministry of Transport in 2007 to relocate Binh Trieu and Saigon stations to Di An Station in Binh Duong Province and use the existing rail line for public transportation to ease traffic congestion in the city centre. However, the ministry didn't agree, instead preferring to study whether to use an elevated section or put the line underground. None of the measures have been implemented so far.

Saigon Railway Corporation has just proposed a plan to turn the line into a tourist site by encouraging local people living on both sides to keep the area clean and plant flower trees around. The proposal however has been rejected by many people who believe this would threaten transport safety.
