This is the second phase of a project to deal with pollution in Tham Luong-Ben Cat-Nuoc Len canal that started in 2002 with a total investment of VND8.20 trillion (USD347.12 million).
The canal runs 32 kilometres through seven districts of 12, Binh Tan, Tan Phu, Tan Binh, Go Vap, Binh Thanh and Binh Chanh.

A representative from the project’s management board said that the project includes dredging the canal and building a 63-km dyke system, 12 ports and three bridges. The site clearance and dredging work has been completed in the first phase.
The project is scheduled to finish in 2025. Once completed, the project will create two roads along the route with a total length of more than 60km.
It is expected to end the flooding in an area of over 14,900 hectares, improve the local environment quality, and facilitate the city’s traffic capacity.
Speaking at the event, chairman of the municipal people's committee, Phan Van Mai, said that the project will help connect some provinces including Long An, Binh Duong, and Dong Nai. It is also a key project in the city's plan to deal with flooding and wastewater during the 2020-2045 period.
