HCM City fines motorbike drivers for carrying bulky goods

Traffic police in Ho Chi Minh City launched a campaign on June 24 to inspect and penalise drivers of two and three-wheeled vehicles that fail to meet safety standards or carry oversized goods.

At Tan Thoi Hiep overpass in District 12, several people were fined for carrying bulky items or using homemade vehicles deemed unsafe.

One man was fined VND 5 million (approximately USD 196) for driving a motorbike without a license plate, and an additional VND 500,000 (USD 20) for lacking a headlight.

A woman was fined VND 700,000 (USD 27) and had her vehicle temporarily impounded for towing another object and failing to present a driver’s licence and vehicle registration.

In recent months, Ho Chi Minh City has reported a series of traffic accidents involving modified tricycles.

On the morning of June 24, a motorised tricycle carrying vegetables collided with a motorcyclist on Street 1, Ward 11, Go Vap District, killing the motorcyclist instantly.

Earlier on June 15, a traffic accident between a truck and a tricycle on Binh Loi Bridge in Thu Duc City resulted in the death of the tricycle driver.

To reduce traffic accidents, city traffic police will continue to crack down on illegal tricycles and vehicles carrying oversized or overloaded cargo.
