Hanoi traffic police fine drivers for breaching railway barriers

Hanoi traffic police have fined dozens of motorists for crossing railway barriers illegally, as part of a safety crackdown following a fatal train collision earlier this week.

The Hanoi Traffic Police Division said officers, working with railway police, conducted inspections along the Giai Phong-Ngoc Hoi section, focusing on busy level crossings.

Dozens of violations were recorded, mostly involving drivers deliberately bypassing barriers after red warning lights had been activated.

At 8.40 am at the Ngoc Hoi-Phan Trong Tue crossing in Thanh Tri Commune, police stopped a 32-year-old motorcyclist who rode across the tracks despite the red signal. He faces a fine of VND 900,000 (USD 34.22).

At around 10.30 am at the same location, a 51-year-old woman driving a car committed a similar offence. She was fined VND 5 million (USD 190) and had her driving licence suspended for two months.

Authorities urged road users to strictly comply with railway signals and barriers, warning that impatience at crossings can have fatal consequences.

The enforcement campaign follows a collision at about 7.50 pm on February 25, when passenger train SE3 struck a lorry stuck on the tracks in the same area. The lorry driver died at the scene, while another man sustained multiple injuries and remains in hospital, according to police.
