Hanoi will speed up its plan for development of its public transportation system in order to meet 25% of people’s transport needs by 2020.

The municipal government has approved a decade long plan to develop public transport system, which includes more environmentally friendly public buses.
The city will also encourage people to use public transportation instead of personal vehicles in order to ease traffic congestion, accidents, pollution, as well as to save money.
Hanoi hopes to meet 15% of transportation demand by 2015, and 25% by 2020.
In order to do this, this city will upgrade infrastructure and add bus routes.
Between 2011 and 2015, the city will have 91 public bus routes, serving 2.14 million passengers each day. The number of bus routes will be increased to 98 between 2016 and 2020, serving 2.73 million passengers a day.
By the end of 2020, public transportation should have the capacity to serve 3.62 million passengers a day.
