Hanoi will set out specific rules on the organization of wedding parties for families of leaders and members of the Communist Party in order to encourage the practice of thrift.

Long said that many party leaders had organised extravagant weddings which were a sheer waste of money and had a negative effect on public opinion. Although the city had issued a directive on the practice of thrift in the organisation of ceremonies and festivals since 1998, there were no specific rules and so few people had followed it.
“This time we will make things clearer such as restricting the number of guests,” Long said. “A couple will only be allowed to hold one wedding party and each invite the maximum of 300 guests to the party. They are also not allowed to hold parties at five-star hotels or resorts. We are considering fines and punishments for those who violate these rules.”
Long also said that relevant agencies and people in localities would monitor the implementation of the directive.
