The National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting said June 24 was likely the hottest day of the current heatwave in northern Vietnam, with temperatures approaching or exceeding 40 degrees Celsius in some areas.
At 1 pm, temperatures in Hanoi reached 39.6 degrees Celsius at the Lang weather station, while several locations in central Vietnam recorded highs close to 40 degrees Celsius.
Northern Vietnam, including Hanoi, is expected to continue experiencing severe heat on June 25, with temperatures ranging from 36-38 degrees Celsius and exceeding 38 degrees Celsius in some places.
From June 26, however, temperatures in Hanoi are forecast to fall to around 26-34 degrees Celsius, with intermittent sunshine and scattered rain showers.
Meanwhile, severe heat is expected to persist longer in central Vietnam, particularly from Thanh Hoa to Danang and in parts of the Central Highlands, where temperatures could exceed 40 degrees Celsius through June 26 and beyond.
Forecasters warned that the combination of extreme heat and low humidity could increase the risk of forest fires, electrical fires and heat-related illnesses.
They noted that actual temperatures experienced outdoors may be 2-4 degrees Celsius higher than official forecasts, particularly in urban areas and on asphalt or concrete surfaces.
