Hailstorms hit Son La and Dien Bien

Hailstorms hit the northern mountainous provinces of Son La and Dien Bien on Tuesday, damaging several houses.

Hailstorms began at around 5.30 pm in Thuan Chau District in Son La and lasted approximately 15 minutes. They affected several local communes, including Chieng Pha, Phong Lai, Muong E, Phong Lap, and E Tong.

The hailstones, ranging from 1 to 3 centimetres in diameter, battered rooftops, ripped off corrugated sheets, and caused significant losses to local crops.

Local authorities are urgently assessing the damage and supporting residents with recovery efforts. Meanwhile, localities have been urged to stay alert to weather updates and instruct communities in taking preventive measures to mitigate further losses.

On the same day, hailstorms struck several communes in the neighbouring province of Dien Bien. The storms lasted about 20 minutes and produced hailstones measuring 1 and 1.5 centimetres in diameter.

A cold spell has been forecast to impact the northern region this weekend. It may bring more hailstorms, tornadoes, and lightning for some northern mountainous areas.
