Since the beginning of the year, landslides have occurred on several major roads in Ha Tinh, while dozens of other locations have shown signs of instability, including cracks and ground subsidence.
Authorities expect the risks to increase during the rainy season and are accelerating inspections, slope stabilisation and other preventive measures while strengthening warnings for road users.
On May 8, about 8,000-9,000 cubic metres of soil and rock collapsed onto Provincial Road 547 in Hai Ninh Ward, burying nearly 100 metres of roadway and completely blocking traffic.
The route has experienced repeated landslides since August 2025, particularly in Ky Xuan Commune, where thousands of cubic metres of debris have at times cut off traffic.
At Choi Mountain in Ky Anh Commune, a 200-metre crack has appeared on the mountainside, with parts of the slope subsiding by up to seven metres, raising concerns over further collapses during prolonged rainfall.
Local authorities have cordoned off the area, erected warning signs and are monitoring the site while seeking approval for emergency stabilisation works, including removing about 1,000 cubic metres of unstable soil and rock.
Nearly 20 locations along National Highway 8 leading to the Cau Treo International Border Gate have also been identified as vulnerable to landslides.
The provincial Department of Construction has instructed local authorities to implement the "four on-the-spot" disaster response principle, maintain round-the-clock monitoring at high-risk sites and divert or suspend traffic if conditions become hazardous.
