Government to spend $10 million on resettling ethnic groups

The Government will provide VND209 billion ($10 million) to help resettle ethnic people, said the Central Highlands Steering Committee.

The Government will provide 209 billion VND ($10 million) to help resettle ethnic people in five provinces in the Central Highlands and the southern province of Binh Phuoc, according to the Central Highlands Steering Committee.

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has instructed the Ministry of Finance to allocate the money from the State Budget.

The aid money will be spent on construction of infrastructure for the resettlement of local ethnic residents, such as roads, schools, hospitals and drainage system.

Dak Lak province, with the highest number of ethnic immigrants, will receive VND89 billion ($4.3 million), followed by Binh Phuoc with VND33 billion ($1.6 million), Lam Dong with VND32 billion ($1.55 million), Dak Nong, Gia Lai and Kon Tum with VND25 billion ($1.2 million), VND23 billion ($1.1 million) and VND7 billion ($338,000), respectively.

The financial support allocated by the Government is reported to not have met the region\'s demand to resettle ethnic people migrating into the region.

For instance, Dak Lak province has been allocated only 26 percent of the total money needed, with seven projects under stagnation due to lack of capital. Only three out of eleven projects in Dak Nong province have been implemented, to date.

There are more than 40,000 ethnic families migrating to the region, who now need support in their resettlement. Most of them live in poverty.
