A hillside dozens of meters high collapsed behind Ma Lau A Hamlet during heavy rain at about 6.30 am, sweeping over six homes. A family of seven was inside one house, but only three escaped, while four were buried. Five other households evacuated minutes earlier.
Rescue efforts are hampered by thick mud several metres deep, preventing machinery from accessing the site. Around 100 officers and residents are using hand tools to search for victims.
Lung Cu is one of 69 communes in Tuyen Quang at highest risk of landslides and flash floods. The province has seen heavy rain over the past two days due to Typhoon Bualoi.
In neighbouring Cao Bang, flash floods struck a construction site of the Dong Dang-Tra Linh Expressway on the evening of September 29, sweeping away three workers from an operations house. Authorities are still searching for them.
By noon on September 30, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment reported 26 deaths, 23 missing, 8 unaccounted for, and 99 injured nationwide due to storm Bualoi, mostly from landslides, flash floods, and tornadoes.
