Ly and his friends show off the dead weasels on Facebook

A photo of a man holding two dead weasels appeared on Facebook on September 11, stirring reaction from users of the social media site.

The forest ranger unit of Duy Xuyen District investigated the case and found that Duong Cong Ly and three of his friends -- Pham Thanh Truong, Ho Phuoc Hiep and Nguyen Ro -- killed the weasels.

Ly said the weasels often attacked the ducks on his farm, so he set traps to kill them. Before cooking the weasels, he posted the photo on Facebook.

Ngo Phi Tham, chairman of Duy Son Commune, said on October 15 the men were punished to raise awareness of the need to protect the natural environment and deter others from killing wild animals.

But the commune accepted Ly was trying to protect his farm and determined a fine of VND1.5 million for each man was appropriate.
