A special orchid has been discovered in Quang Tri Province.

Mr. Le Van Quy, Quang Tri Province Deputy Minister of the Forest Management Bureau, announced the discovery of “Lan Hai Dai” at the top of Voi Mep Mount, Huong Son, Huong Hoa on March 4. Discovered by the Forest Management Bureau’s biology preservation researchers, this special species of orchid is scientifically known as Paphiopedilum appletonianum and found in parts of South East Asia.
“Lan Hai Dai” has been listed in both Vietnam’s Red Data Book and the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. This particular plant of the orchid family has a very short body and often grows in small clumps on humus or sandstone mountains at the height of 900m.
In Quang Tri, “Lan Hai Dai” was discovered at an elevation between 1000m and 1700m high, on Voi Mep Mountain, in the Bac Huong Hoa Nature Conservation Area.
It was reported that Quang Tri is the third area where this precious orchid species has been found, after previously being found in Thua Thien – Hue and Lam Dong Province. The species is known to be very beautiful but limited in its individual quantity. It not only has an aesthetic value, but also an economical value and is currently under the threat of extinction.
