Flood losses reach VND 5.45 trillion in Thai Nguyen, Cao Bang and Lang Son

Historic floods in the northern provinces of Thai Nguyen, Cao Bang and Lang Son have caused estimated losses of VND 5.45 trillion (approximately USD 206 million) as of the afternoon of October 10.

Many houses in Thai Nguyen still seriously flooded

According to the Department of Dyke Management and Natural Disaster Prevention under the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, Thai Nguyen suffered about VND 2.4 trillion in damages, Lang Son around VND 1.05 trillion, and Cao Bang roughly VND 2 trillion.

Heavy rains and flooding triggered by Typhoon Matmo have left 18 people dead or missing. Thai Nguyen reported eight casualties, including six deaths and one missing in floods and one death in a landslide. Cao Bang recorded one death, Thanh Hoa three, and Bac Ninh six, mostly caused by flash floods and landslides.

Flooding has submerged around 230,200 houses, including 200,000 in Thai Nguyen, 11,000 in Bac Ninh, 7,500 in Cao Bang, 3,000 in Lang Son, nearly 8,200 in Hanoi, 332 in Tuyen Quang and 118 in Son La.

As of 5 pm on October 10, nearly 66,700 houses remained inundated, including 54,200 in Thai Nguyen, 6,340 in Bac Ninh, 5,743 in Hanoi and 359 in Lang Son.

In the agricultural sector, more than 25,260 hectares of rice and other crops have been flooded or damaged, while about 13,000 livestock and 690,000 poultry have died or been swept away, according to initial reports.

The Department of Dyke Management and Natural Disaster Prevention said that water levels on the Cau, Thuong (Bac Ninh) and Trung (Lang Son) rivers have peaked and are gradually receding. Over the next 12 hours, flood levels on these rivers are expected to continue falling but remain above Alert Level 3.
