Festival honours Buon Ma Thuot coffee

The fifth Buon Ma Thuot Coffee Festival has kicked off in Buon Ma Thuot city, Central Highlands province of Dak Lak, as part of activities to mark the 40th anniversary of the Buon Ma Thuot victory.

The event was attended by Politburo member and permanent member of the Party Central Committee Secretariat Le Hong Anh; Politburo member and Minister of Public Security, General Tran Dai Quang, who is also Chairman of the Steering Committee for the Central Highlands; along with leaders and people from localities and representatives of embassies and international organisations.


During the opening ceremony, invited guests and visitors enjoyed numerous unique arts performances praising the Party and President Ho Chi Minh as well as the land and people of the Central Highland region and a colourful fireworks display.

The festival, which will run until March 12, features a wide variety of activities including a coffee fair, a fine arts exhibition on coffee and an exhibition introducing the history of CADA plantation, which has been recognised as a national historical relic site in Ea Yong commune, Krong Pak district.

Additionally, a Central Highlands Gong performance, a seminar discussing the prospects of the coffee industry and a wood sculpting contest will also be held during the festival.

Addressing the ceremony, Minister Tran Dai Quang praised the achievements of socio-economic development that the province has gained, especially in the coffee industry, over the past years.

He also asked the Central Highlands provinces to co-ordinate with central ministries, branches and the Steering Committee for the Central Highlands to plan investment in land for coffee cultivation, produce, as well as selecting new coffee varieties and apply scientific-technological advances in coffee growing, cultivation and processing.

In 2014, the annual export value of Dak Lak coffee reached US$700 million, accounting for over 60% of the total annual State budget of the province. The coffee industry created jobs for around 300 direct and over 100 indirect labours.

The annual festival is held to honour coffee growers and processors, scientists and political and social organisations who have significantly contributed to bringing Central Highlands coffee products to international markets.
