At least two people have died, and three others suffered severe injuries after being hit by a fallen tree in a park in HCM City on August 9.
The incident occurred at about 7 am on August 9 when a branch of an old tree suddenly fell onto a group of elderly people doing morning exercise in Tao Dan Park in District 1.
A witness said that the branch fell from some 20 metres, hitting at least five people. Two of them, a 70-year-old woman and a 62-year-old man, died on the spot. Three others, aged between 60-70, were injured and had been sent to a local hospital.
"The tree branch was still fresh when it fell," the witness said.
A representative from the HCM City MTV Green Park Company said that the tree branch was nearly 10 metres long and had a diameter of 20-30 cm. It fell from a 30-metre-tall tree when there were no strong winds or rain. The branch looked healthy from the outside but had some problems inside.
The case is being investigated.
Tao Dan Park is home to many old trees and is a popular place for people to do physical exercises and other festivity events.
