An animal trainer employed at the Dai Nam Tourist Site, in the southern province of Binh Duong, was attacked and killed by an elephant on December 23.

While repainting the cage, Doan Van Tai, 28, from Vinh Long Province was suddenly attacked by the elephant, which pinned him with his tusks and threw him to a nearby water tank.
Pham Van Ven, a zookeeper who witnessed the incident, and tried to save the victim, said the elephant was a one-year old male, weighing around two tonnes.
Tai was dead on arrival at the hospital from a severe fracture to the scull. He had served as an animal trainer at the Dai Nam Tourist Site for over ten years, and trained the elephant that killed him. The elephant, brought to the zoo from Dak Lak Province, has been isolated in a cage.
