A volunteer group in the central province of Quang Ngai has purchased 35 egg-bearing king crabs to release into the waters off Ly Son Island District, aiming to raise public awareness of marine resource restoration and protection.
According to Huynh Ngoc Dung, Director of the Ly Son Marine Protected Area Management Board, the 35 8-kilos crabs are priced between VND 700,000 (USD 26.83) and VND 800,000 (USD 30.66) per kilogramme.
Group Team Light Charity has been working with the Ly Son Marine Protected Area Management Board to release king crabs into Ly Son waters since 2023, Dung added.
The king crab is a speciality of Ly Son. The breeding season is from March to June, which also coincides with the peak tourism season. During this time, local fishermen ramp up crab catching to meet demand.
Local fishermen are being called on not to catch egg-bearing crabs to help protect and restore coastal marine resources.
