Professor Nguyen Dinh Xuyen, of the Geophysical Institute, confirmed that the HCMC aftershocks were triggered by a 4.7 Richter-scale earthquake offshore from Phan Thiet.
Nhan, a resident living in the Ngo Gia Tu building said, "I felt my home swaying suddenly. I’m on the fifth floor. At first, I thought it had been caused by big truck running down the street. Later, I found that many people living around felt the shocks just like me."
Resident Nguyen Thanh Vu, employee of a company on Dien Bien Phu Street said, "While walking in the corridor, suddenly I felt the building shaking clearly for about 5 seconds."
The Geophysical Institute is still monitoring the situation.
HCMC has felt earthquake aftershocks in the past. On August 5, 2005, the city was hit heavily by a 4 - 5 Richter-scale earthquake which happened in the ocean about 20-30 kilometres from Vung Tau and on November 28, 2007, it felt another 4 - 5 Richter-scale earthquake with the epicenter in Binh Thuan - Vung Tau.
