Dozens of foetal remains found scattered by trees and walls

Workers widening a road in Ninh Binh Province have discovered nearly 40 sets of fetal remains scattered around trees, walls and fences at a former cemetery site.

On the morning of June 8, construction workers and cemetery management staff continued recovering fetal remains discovered during the expansion of Tay Thanh Road in Hoa Lu Ward, Ninh Binh Province, before arranging burial procedures.

According to a Dantri/Dtinews reporter at the scene, workers found between three and five sets of fetal remains around a single tree between 7 am and 9 am. The total number recovered so far has reached nearly 40.

One worker said the number could rise further because the area was formerly part of a cemetery. The site was later used as a funeral facility serving hospitals in Ninh Binh Province.

A representative of the project developer said that when work first began on the Tay Thanh Road expansion project near the former Ninh Binh Province Obstetrics and Paediatrics Hospital, workers discovered several ceramic burial urns believed to have contained human remains.

The burial items inside the urns had been carefully arranged. However, due to the passage of time, no human bones were found inside.

As construction progressed, workers uncovered additional wrapped packages suspected of containing fetal remains. The packages were scattered around tree bases, walls and fence lines across the site.

“All remains recovered from the area are being gathered at a designated location where customary funeral rites will be conducted before burial at a local cemetery,” a representative of the construction contractor said.
