Tung admitted to killing Do Duy Thien, 47, his wife Chu Hong Hanh, 48, and their 11-year-old grandson on the night of October 2.

According to investigators, Tung was heavily addicted to online gaming. He told police he committed the murders as part of a “mission assigned in the game”. During the attack, he used a cloth bag to collect bullet casings to prevent them from falling to the ground and complicating the investigation.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the true motive, as initial evidence at the crime scene suggested robbery. Many household items were found in disarray, and the family’s safe had been moved to the back of the house and smashed open.

The murders were discovered at around 6 am on October 3, when neighbours visited the family’s home, which also served as a farm produce shop in Dak Nhau Commune.

The bodies of Thien and his grandson were found on the porch beside a meal tray, while Hanh’s body was discovered near the family’s car. The interior of the house was ransacked, and the safe had been dragged outside and broken.
Autopsies confirmed that all three victims had been shot in the head.

The family’s house is located on a remote hillside with no street lighting.
Thien and Hanh usually lived there with their two children, but the children were not at home on the night of the killings.
