The Dong Nai City People's Committee approved on May 12 a plan for a new urban area at the western gateway to Long Thanh Airport.
Under the decision, the planning area covers more than 6,318 hectares, including parts of Long Thanh Ward, Phuoc Thai Commune and Long Phuoc Commune. Specifically, it is bordered to the north by the Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay Expressway; to the south by the Ben Luc - Long Thanh Expressway; to the east by Long Thanh Airport, Long Thanh Ward and Long Phuoc Commune; and to the west by Nhon Trach Ward and Phuoc An Commune. The area currently has more than 61,000 residents and, under the plan, the population is forecast to reach between 400,000 and 450,000 by 2045.

According to the Dong Nai City People's Committee, the plan aims to create efficient spatial organisation and land use by making proper use of local potential and advantages to develop key economic sectors, while ensuring national defence, security and sustainable development.

It also seeks to translate the development orientation for the Long Thanh Airport urban region into concrete plans, serving management and construction investment needs. The project is intended to create a modern gateway urban area and optimise the use of strategic infrastructure, ensuring effective links with Long Thanh Airport as well as ring roads, expressways and the Thu Thiem - Long Thanh railway.
