Dong Nai culls nearly 2,000 pigs after African swine fever outbreak

Authorities in Dong Nai City have culled 1,942 pigs after an outbreak of African swine fever (ASF) was confirmed at a local farm, officials said on Tuesday.

The pigs, owned by a farmer in Tan Phu Ward, were destroyed after testing positive for the highly contagious disease.

According to the city's Department of Agriculture and Environment, the 1,942-pig herd began showing signs of illness on June 12. Inspections four days later found 27 pigs dead and 355 displaying ASF symptoms.

Laboratory tests by the National Centre for Veterinary Diagnosis and Testing No. 2 confirmed the presence of African swine fever, prompting authorities and the farm owner to cull the entire herd in line with regulations.

Preliminary investigations suggested the outbreak may have been linked to the farm's open-housing system, which allowed insects such as flies and mosquitoes to enter and potentially spread the virus.

Authorities warned that ASF could continue to spread and have instructed affected areas to strengthen disinfection measures, including the use of lime powder and chemical disinfectants in and around livestock facilities.

Farmers with infected or suspected animals have also been ordered to carry out thorough sanitation and biosecurity measures to prevent further transmission.

Monitoring of burial sites, environmental safeguards and controls on livestock transport, trading and slaughtering activities are also being strengthened.

Food safety inspections at local markets are also being strengthened as part of disease prevention efforts.
