Domestic flights cut as jet fuel pressure hits airlines

Many domestic flights in Vietnam will be cancelled from April 1 as rising jet fuel costs and supply concerns linked to Middle East tensions strain the aviation sector.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam said disruptions to Jet A-1 supply have put carriers at risk of shortages. Vietnam Airlines will prioritise key routes while suspending several others.

Affected services include Haiphong-Buon Ma Thuot, Haiphong-Cam Ranh, Haiphong-Phu Quoc, Haiphong-Can Tho, Ho Chi Minh City-Van Don, Ho Chi Minh City-Rach Gia and Ho Chi Minh City-Dien Bien, with about 23 flights per week set to be cancelled.

Global energy markets have surged amid supply disruptions, with Brent crude hovering at around USD 110-120 per barrel and jet fuel prices in Asia reaching USD 220-230 per barrel.

A survey of nearly 40 international and regional airlines found more than 60 per cent have raised fares or introduced fuel surcharges since mid-March.

Vietnamese carriers are also preparing to introduce fuel surcharges on international routes, potentially from early April, as cost pressures intensify.
