Dengue fever continues to surge in HCM City

Dengue fever has continued to spread rapidly in HCM City, prompting the municipal Health Department to direct hospitals to expand bed capacity in response to the emergency.

The city has recorded more than 26,000 dengue cases since the beginning of this year, according to the HCM City Centre for Disease Control, an increase of over 221 per cent on-year.

In the past week alone, HCM City reported more than 2,000 new dengue cases, of which 74 per cent were classified as severe and 8 per cent showed warning signs of complications.

According to Deputy Director of the HCM City Health Department, Huynh Minh Chin, the figures are alarming. In response, the city’s Health Department has instructed hospitals and medical facilities to increase training and treatment while preparing additional beds to cope with the emergency."

The HCM City health sector has reinforced outbreak surveillance, trained medical staff from local clinics to specialists, and intensified multimedia campaigns to make prevention information more accessible to the public.

Health authorities have also warned of chikungunya. No cases have been reported in HCM City so far, and with no vaccine or specific treatment available, mosquito and larva control remain the most effective measure.

People are urged to regularly check and eliminate mosquito larvae from water containers, clean up waste, scrub tanks, and cooperate with local health workers during mosquito spraying operations.
