Dengue cases surge in many localities during rainy season

Dengue fever cases are rising in many localities, prompting the Ministry of Health to warn of serious complications if patients are complacent, particularly during the rainy season.

According to the Ministry of Health, in September, Vietnam recorded 21,152 dengue fever cases and six related deaths.

Since December 14 last year, the country has recorded 86,253 dengue cases and 17 deaths, a rise of 15.3 per cent in cases and six additional fatalities compared to the same period in 2024.

According to the Hanoi Centre for Disease Control, the city reported 336 dengue cases from September 26 to October 3, an increase from the previous week. Seventeen new outbreak clusters were also identified, bringing the total number of active dengue hotspots to 30.

The National Hospital for Tropical Diseases has recently seen several dengue patients fall critically ill just days after developing a high fever. Doctor Dong Phu Khiem, Deputy Head of the Intensive Care Unit, said many were admitted with life-threatening organ failure.

Many people think a fever will pass in a few days and stay home, but haemoconcentration can cause shock and death even before bleeding appears. Anyone with a fever should get tested at a medical facility rather than self-treat at home, the doctor advised.

The Ministry of Health warns that storms and floods create favourable conditions for disease outbreaks such as acute diarrhoea, respiratory and skin infections, eye diseases, and dengue fever.

People need to kill mosquito larvae, remove stagnant water containers, and sleep under nets, even during the day, to prevent mosquito-borne diseases.
