People queue to buy good at a store on Me Suot Street in Danang on the evening of October 21.

At Bach Hoa Xanh and WinMart stores along Au Co and Pham Nhu Xuong streets in Hoa Khanh and Lien Chieu wards, customers poured in after work. Many arrived still wearing raincoats and helmets, loading trolleys with vegetables, dried food, meat, eggs, and other necessities.

Residents said they were preparing food supplies for three to five days in case the storm caused power cuts, flooding, or transport disruptions. Fresh vegetables sold out first, followed by instant noodles, bottled water, milk, dried food, eggs, and canned goods.

Shelves of vegetables, meat, and frozen foods stood nearly empty in some Bach Hoa Xanh stores as staff raced to restock and assist customers at checkout. WinMart outlets reported similar scenes, with long queues and carts filled with noodles, milk, drinks, and snacks.

Tran Anh Duc, a student at Danang University of Technology, said he was surprised to find the shelves almost bare. “I went to two stores but couldn’t buy any vegetables,” he said.

Luu Van Hung, manager of a Bach Hoa Xanh branch in Hoa Khanh, said customer numbers had tripled, with vegetables selling out first.

Traditional markets such as Hoa Khanh and Thanh Vinh were also packed, and many stalls ran out of stock early in the evening.

As of 6 am on October 22, the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting reported that Typhoon Fengshen was about 280 kilometres east-northeast of Danang, with sustained winds of 102 kilometres per hour and gusts up to level 12. The storm was moving west-southwest at 10 kilometres per hour.

Forecasters expect the storm to weaken into a tropical depression before landfall due to its interaction with a cold air mass from the north. By 4 am on October 23, it is likely to reach the coastal areas between Thua Thien-Hue and Quang Ngai, with winds of level 7 and gusts up to level 9.

Strong winds of level 6-7, gusting to 8-9, are expected along the coast from Quang Tri to Danang from the afternoon of October 22. Rising sea levels of 0.4-0.8 metres, combined with high tides, may cause flooding in low-lying areas and coastal erosion.

To ensure safety, several wards in Danang have announced school closures from October 22 as the city braces for the approaching storm.
