Cyclists have increasingly been seen on some expressways in Hanoi, posing a threat of potential traffic accidents.

On July 11, a car driver, Le Tung Anh, shared photos of a long line of cyclists he overtook on Vo Nguyen Giap Highway.

"This group were cycling in car-only lanes with a speed limit of 90 km/h at 5 am on July 11," Tung Anh said. "It was really dangerous."

Tung Anh also added that besides the Vo Nguyen Giap Highway, Thang Long Avenue also saw lots of people cycling, especially in the early morning hours.

"I've shared and discussed this problem on many forums and cyclists explained that they had few options as there were now no separate lanes for them in Hanoi," he said. "They said that they usually exercised during the early morning hours when the traffic wasn’t crowded. But that's illegal and poses a potential danger of traffic accidents."

Speaking to Dantri/Dtinews about this problem, Lawyer Tran Xuan Tien from the Hanoi Bar Association said that cyclists could be fined between VND 400,000-600,000 travelling on such roads. They could even face criminal charges if they caused serious accidents.

"I think the fines aren’t strict enough to prevent the problem," Lawyer Tran Xuan Tien said. "Local authorities should improve traffic infrastructure to provide separate lanes for cyclists."
