International Women’s Day is normally an important day for flower sellers in Vietnam, but this year, demand has plummeted to a record low.

Flower prices have sharply dropped on the occasion of this year’s International Women’s Day
According to farmers in Da Lat, they have seen considerable fall in flower orders from traders in Hanoi, Danang and HCM City.
Last year’s International Women’s Day, a Dalat rose was sold at VND7,000-8,000, but the price is just half this year.
The same situation has also been seen in Tay Tuu Flower Village in Hanoi. A bunch of 50 rose branches is just VND70,000-110,000.
Le Thi Thanh Hai, a flower grower in Tay Tuu, said that in previous years, traders used to directly came to her gardens to reserve flowers around two weeks before International Women’s Day; but this year, just a few went to order.
A rose in Tay Tuu Village is being sold to traders at just VND1,500-2,000, down by half against before.
Bui Kien Trung, a flower wholesaler in Quang Ba Market in Hanoi’s Tay Ho District, said that he had never seen such a sharp decrease in flower prices before.
Trung explained that the fall was due to the on-going Covid-19 epidemic which caused more difficulties for enterprises, so they bought fewer flowers for their female staff and partners.
Meanwhile, many schools have still temporarily closed, so students and their parents bought fewer flowers as gifts to teachers.
Not only roses, but also other kinds of other flowers have also seen prices fall.
Doan Phuong Bich, owner of a flower shop in Hanoi, said that despite offering the 30% price discounts her shop had witnessed a 60% fall in demand.
