Con Dao Island struggling severe petrol shortages

Petrol supply disruption has resulted in the serious fuel shortfall in Con Dao Island in the southern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau.

Petrol supply disruption has resulted in the serious fuel shortfall in Con Dao Island in the southern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau.

Con Dao is now home to five petrol stations which all share the same supplier, the Duong Dong Group Joint Stock Company located in HCM City. The firm’s oil tankers are undergoing technical checks. It has hired other oil tankers for the fuel transportation, but their capacity has been too small to ensure local demand is met.

Each motorbike in the locality is only allowed to buy VND30,000 (USD1.27) of petrol. Meanwhile, the limit for a car is not more than VND100,000.

The high numbers of tourists visiting at this time of the year has also added to the petrol shortage problem.

Authorities of Con Dao have called the provincial Department of Industry and Trade for help.

According to the authorities, it is necessary for petroleum traders on the island to purchase the fuel from at least two suppliers, instead of the only one as at present. They also suggested assistance from agencies for Con Dao petroleum traders in building fuel storage warehouses.

The Ba Ria-Vung Tau Department of Industry and Trade has requested Dong Duong Group JS Company to take urgent measures to ensure sufficient fuel.
