Charity event to fund eye surgeries

The Japan-Vietnam Cultural Interaction Project will coordinate with its partners to hold the 4th charity piano concert and dinner party next month.

The Japan-Vietnam Cultural Interaction Project, HCM City-based international moving company RT International Co and Ms Catherine Guo will hold the fourth charity piano concert and dinner party early next month.

The party will raise funds for ophthalmologist Hattori Tadashi\'s and his near decade-long work in Vietnam and for Japan\'s earthquake victims.

Katsuaki Nishikawa, chairman of the project, said at a press meeting last Thursday in HCM City that the dinner would take place from 6pm on October 1 at Park Hyatt Saigon hotel in HCM City\'s District 1.

Japanese classical pianist Ayuko Higuchi will play a special recital of Chopin works and several Vietnamese pieces.

Ayuko began playing piano at the age of five and has played with the Kansai Symphonic Orchestra.

He won first prize at the 10th International Porto Piano Competition in Portugal and has performed at the prestigious Carnegie Hall in New York.

Tickets cost USD100 per person, including a four-course French dinner and wine, and can be purchased at the Japanese restaurant Yamaneko at 13/1 Le Thanh Ton Street, Liti shop at 40D Ly Tu Trong Street, Red Apron restaurant at 22 Chu Manh Trinh Street and RT International Co Ltd at 29/12 Nguyen Binh Khiem Street.

Proceeds from the third charity dinner amounted to $30,000. Organisers expect to raise much more this year, with 70 per cent of proceeds going to Hattori\'s Vietnamese poor patients and 30 per cent for the victims of the disaster in Japan.

The Japanese ophthalmologist has treated more than 9,000 eye patients since coming to Vietnam to work voluntarily in April 2002.

Hattori divides his time between Japan and Vietnam to work and seek funds to cover eye surgeries for the poor in Vietnam.

He also teaches eye-operation techniques to Vietnamese doctors.
