Approximately 12,000 households in Vietnam’s southernmost province of Ca Mau are grappling with a scarcity of clean water due to a prolonged drought.

In Bien Bach Commune, Thoi Binh District, out of 1,847 households, 450 are experiencing acute shortages, forcing residents to purchase water at VND40,000-50,000 (USD1.63-2.04) per cubic metre.

People have to buy clean water from boats at high prices

Le Tuan Anh, a resident of Bien Bach Commune, reported that his family has been spending around VND500,000 monthly on water for the past three months, exacerbating their financial strain. Similarly, Nguyen Thanh Tung's household has resorted to using saline water for bathing and washing dishes for the last month due to the shortage.

People in Ca Mau are being encouraged to conserve water in response to the ongoing drought. Local authorities are assessing the situation to identify and assist households in need.

This year, Vietnam's Mekong Delta region is experiencing early saline intrusion, a phenomenon that is starting a month earlier than usual, according to the Southern Institute of Water Resources Research. The peak period of this saline intrusion is expected to continue until the end of March.
