The upgrade project, with an investment of around VND 2.4 trillion (USD 98 million), will be carried out by Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV).
The project aims to equip Ca Mau Airport to handle narrow-body aircraft, such as the Airbus A320 and A321, and their equivalents, thereby helping to drive socio-economic development in Ca Mau and across the Mekong Delta region.
Key works will include the construction of a new runway, taxiways linking the runway with the apron, a new southern aircraft apron, and the renovation and expansion of the existing passenger terminal, along with some supporting facilities.
Under the 2021-2030 plan, the airport will be upgraded to ICAO 4C and Level II military standards, with a capacity for one million passengers and 1,000 tonnes of cargo per year, regularly handling Code C aircraft, such as the Airbus A320 and A321.
By 2050, Ca Mau Airport aims to serve around three million passengers and 3,000 tonnes of cargo annually, positioning itself as a key transport gateway for southern Vietnam.
Built during the French colonial period, Ca Mau Airport currently has only a runway that can accommodate small aircraft, such as the ATR72 (90 seats) and Embraer E190 (124 seats). Its passenger terminal has an annual capacity of 200,000.
At present, Ca Mau Airport operates a single daily service to HCM City. A Hanoi-Ca Mau route launched in mid-2023 was suspended shortly afterwards.
