The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) held an emergency meeting on April 26 to discuss solutions to prevent the spread of blue ear pig disease in the Red River Delta.
The Veterinary Department reported that 33,000 pigs in 9 provinces and cities, including Hai Duong, Thai Binh, Thai Nguyen, Hung Yen, Bac Ninh, Hai Phong, Hanoi, Quang Nam and Nam Dinh, have been infected and 10,000 of them have been destroyed.
Hai Duong has 47 communes in 5 districts badly hit by the disease, followed by Thai Binh and Hung Yen.
In Hanoi’s Gia Lam district, 370 pigs in the 5 communes of Trung Mau, Kim Son, Phu Thi, Le Chi and Duong Quang in Gia Lam district, have contracted the disease and 320 have been culled.
The Veterinary Department acting director, Hoang Van Nam, said that the disease is now at its peak and likely to spread fast.
MARD Deputy Minister Diep Kinh Tan asked the affected provinces to quickly set up quarantine areas and propose levels of compensation payment for breeders.
