According to Nguyen Van Thi, director of the Bac Giang Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the province produced 85,713 tonnes of fruit, down 50 percent year over year because of crop failure.
Bac Giang's litchi productivity dropped this year
Up to 70 percent of Bac Giang’s litchi were sold in Vietnam, with the remainder exported to China, Japan, the US, the EU and Australia.
Despite lower productivity, the province’s litchi revenues were estimated at VND6.6 trillion thanks to higher prices.
A kilo of Bac Giang’s litchi was sold for between VND60,000-80,000 (USD 2.35-3.14), three to four times last year's price.
Vu Van Men from Dong Giao Village in Luc Ngan District said that his family had sold two tonnes of litchi for export to Australia and Japan. The price is nearly four times higher than that in 2023.
However, many litchi growers experienced crop failure, causing them great losses. Unfavourable weather was blamed for low litchi productivity.
