Authorities remove illegal seafront bungalows in Phu Quoc

Authorities in An Giang Province demolished nine illegal bungalows in Phu Quoc after nearly 1,900 square metres of coastal land and protected marine areas were illegally occupied.

The An Giang Department of Agriculture and Environment, in coordination with other agencies, on June 15 carried out enforcement measures against Nguyen Quoc, 57, owner of Rock Beach Boutique Phu Quoc Resort, for illegally constructing buildings on encroached coastal areas in the Phu Quoc Special Zone.

According to authorities, Nguyen built multiple bungalows and other structures on more than 1,880 square metres of coastal land and sea surface in Cay Sao Ham Ninh Quarter.

Of the total encroached area, more than 1,038 square metres fell under the management of the Phu Quoc Special Zone administration. The area was allegedly occupied to build rental accommodation, install concrete pillars supporting platforms over the sea and construct access walkways.

The remaining 840 square metres were located within the administrative and service subzone of the Phu Quoc Marine Protected Area, managed by Phu Quoc National Park and the Kien Giang Marine Protected Area Management Board.

Authorities said Nguyen had also constructed unauthorised structures in this protected area, including concrete piles, wooden walkways extending over the water and nine bungalow style rental units.

Following the enforcement action, Nguyen was ordered to restore the site to its original condition and remove all illegal structures, returning the encroached land to the relevant state authorities.

He was also required to surrender nearly VND 45 million (approximately USD 1,700) in illicit profits earned from the unauthorised business activities.
