Action plan aims to provide better care for elderly

One and a half million elderly people will be receiving care at support centres or monthly social allowance by 2015.

One and a half million elderly people will be receiving care at support centres or monthly social allowance by 2015.

According to the national action plan on the elderly, signed by the PM on November 22, 100 percent of sick elderly people will be examined and treated, cared for by their families, and freed from the burden of being forced to live in dilapidated housing.

By 2015, the action plan specifies 25 percent of communes should have a support fund for the elderly and each province should maintain at least two institutions offering the elderly support services.

In the next three years 2,000 inter-generational clubs will be established, with the number increasing to 5,000 by 2020.

The program will be funded by both the State and sources mobilised from individuals and Vietnamese and international organisations.

The Ministry of Labour, Invalids, and Social Affairs has been assigned the responsibility of working closely with other related ministries and agencies to coordinate the plan’s stages.
