Hanoi plans to build 15 metro routes with a total length of over 617 kilometres by 2045 with a vision to 2065.

Speaking at a meeting with deputy PM Tran Hong Ha on September 24, Minister of Transport Nguyen Danh Huy said that the two cities plan to add another 369 kilometres of metro lines by 2045, and another 158 kilometres by 2060.

"The two cities' metro network is expected to handle between 30-35 percent of the public transport demand by 2035, and between 55-70 percent after that," the minister said.

At the meeting, leaders of Hanoi and HCM cities shared that they have completed the survey work and prepared land for all the metro projects that were listed in the plan by 2030.


Speaking at the meeting, deputy PM Tran Hong Ha asked authorities in Hanoi and HCM City to work closely with the Transport Ministry and concerned agencies on a detailed plan for all the local metro projects before submitting to the government.

Currently, Hanoi has only two metro routes operating including the 13-km Cat Linh - Ha Dong line and the elevated section stretching 8.5 km of the line connecting Nhon - Hanoi Station.

Hanoi plans to build 15 metro routes with a total length of over 617 kilometres by 2045 with a vision to 2065. The estimated capital will be USD55 billion.

In HCM City, the first metro project spanning nearly 20 kilometres between Ben Thanh and Suoi Tien has almost been completed and scheduled to be put into use at the end of this year. The city plans to build over 168 kilometres of metro lines by 2045 and over 510 kilometres by 2060.
