Lao Cai halts tours to Sapa, Y Ty after Typhoon Bualoi

Authorities in the northern province of Lao Cai have requested the suspension of tours to areas affected by Typhoon Bualoi to ensure the safety of visitors.

Days of heavy rain brought by the typhoon’s circulation have flooded low-lying areas in Lao Cai, triggering flash floods and landslides that have cut off roads to major tourist sites, including Sapa, Y Ty, Mu Cang Chai, and Nghia Lo.

The Lao Cai Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism has ordered all tourist sites and businesses to suspend tours to storm-affected areas until safety is assured following Typhoon Bualoi and subsequent floods.

The Lao Cai Department of Culture, Sports, and Tourism has requested that the Lao Cai Tourism Association provide regular storm updates, proactively support visitors, and suspend or adjust itineraries in hazardous areas.

The Lao Cai Tourism Association has been urged to support visitors after the storm with measures such as discounts on lodging, meals, and transport, thereby helping to promote Lao Cai as a safe and welcoming destination.

Tourist sites and service providers are required to closely monitor and record the number of visitors, groups, and guides present in high-risk areas prone to flash floods and landslides, while maintaining regular communication to track the situation and provide timely support as needed.

Tourism units and businesses have been instructed to implement protective measures to minimise property damage from the typhoon, including reinforcing buildings, glass doors, roofs, and signage; cutting electricity in hazardous areas; and preparing generators, clean water, and food supplies to ensure readiness for any situation.

The Lao Cai Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism has requested that travel companies and service providers contact tourists with itineraries during the storm period to inform them and arrange cancellations, adjustments, or rescheduling to ensure safety and protect their best interests.
