Notre-Dame Cathedral will welcome visitors again from November 27 following a six-month halt due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Notre-Dame Cathedral will welcome visitors again from November 27 following a six-month halt due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

This came after the municipal people's committee’s announcement that religious activities may resume in areas with low risk of coronavirus.

Ho Van Xuan, head representative of the Saigon Archdiocese and parish priest of the cathedral, said that the cathedral was located in the green zone so would be permitted to reopen.

Xuan, however, added that visitors would be required to conform to the Ministry of Heath’s 5K messages when entering the cathedral, including ensuring a safe distance and wearing a mask. An area for sterilisation has also been arranged for visitors.

Ho Van Hung from District 3 said that during the closure he had stood outside the cathedral to pray. Meanwhile, before the pandemic in HCM City, he used to visit every weekend.

Many people were happy to hear that the cathedral would resume services this weekend.

Hung noted that the cathedral that can host 1,200-1,500 people would only be hosting at half capacity.

The renovation work on the 150-year-old cathedral started mid-2017 and is scheduled to be completed in 2025. To date, much of the upgrades have been completed, including work on the two bell towers.
