The entrance gate to the Dong Van Karst Plateau Global Geopark in Tuyen Quang Province collapsed at around 7 am on October 8 after prolonged heavy rainfall triggered by the remnants of storms Bualoi and Matmo, local authorities confirmed.
According to Pham Duc Nam, Chairman of Dong Van Commune People’s Committee, the entire stone-and-wood structure gave way due to soil saturation and landslides in the surrounding area. No injuries were reported, but the collapse of the well-known landmark has left many visitors and locals saddened.

Following the incident, local authorities and rescue teams cleared debris and secured traffic safety at the site. Plans are being developed to restore the damaged structure.
The Dong Van gate, inaugurated in November 2024, stood 6.3 metres tall and 10.5 metres wide, constructed from 740 stone blocks, 18.5 cubic metres of timber, and over 26,000 roof tiles.
The gate was considered an emblem of the Dong Van Karst Plateau, symbolising the region’s rugged mountain landscape and Mong ethnic motifs. It was also a popular photo stop for travellers marking their journey to Vietnam’s northernmost frontier.
