Ban Gioc Waterfall closed to tourists due to typhoons

Ban Gioc Waterfall, located on the border with China, has had to suspend tourist visits twice within a week due to consecutive storms.

According to Nong Nhu Hue, Deputy Director of the Ban Gioc Waterfall Tourism Management Board in Cao Bang, water levels began rising on the afternoon of October 6, and heavy rain later that evening caused the water to surge about two metres above normal.

The aftermath of Typhoon Matmo has brought prolonged downpours across the province, leading to strong currents and heightened safety risks for visitors.

To ensure absolute safety for tourists and locals, the management board decided on October 7 to temporarily suspend visits to the Ban Gioc Waterfall until weather conditions improve and water levels return to a safe level.

Visitors are also advised to stay away from the waterfall’s edge, riverbanks, and areas prone to landslides or flooding. Additionally, the management board has urged tourists to follow official announcements from local authorities and the site’s official channels for updates on the situation and the reopening schedule.

“This is the first time Ban Gioc Waterfall has closed twice in a week,” Hue said, adding that the move was necessary to ensure visitor safety amid worsening weather and flooding in Cao Bang.

Cao Bang experienced persistent heavy rain from the night of October 6 to October 7, which was affected by Typhoon Matmo, heightening the risks of flooding, flash floods, and landslides.

Ban Gioc Waterfall is one of Cao Bang’s most captivating attractions, renowned for its majestic, fairy-like beauty with cascades plunging over 30 metres.

The area is primarily inhabited by the Tay ethnic minority group, who have long settled at the foot of the mountains and along the streams, relying on the waters of Ban Gioc for their livelihood.
