Salt production has a long-standing tradition in Ninh Thuan. Key production areas are the communes of Tri Hai, Nhon Hai, and Phuong Hai (Ninh Hai District), as well as Ca Na, Phuoc Diem, and Phuoc Minh (Thuan Nam District).

Farmers level and compact the field surface to create a firm layer to produce salt before pumping seawater into the fields. After 7-10 days, when the seawater evaporates, they rake the salt in one batch, yielding around 1.5-1.7 tonnes per 1,000 square metres. Every month, they can harvest 3-4 batches.

Ninh Thuan boasts around 3,100 hectares of salt fields, producing approximately 400,000 tonnes annually. The salt industry supports the livelihoods of around 2,960 people from 637 local households.

Salt is sold at VND800-1,200 per kilo, giving farmers a stable source of income.

To sustain salt production, Ninh Thuan is carrying out a 2021-2030 development plan to become a key industrial-scale salt hub in Vietnam’s South Central region, supplying the chemical industry and high-quality refined salt processing.
