Rescue of wounded monkey in Son Tra underway

Forest rangers on Son Tra Peninsula in the central city of Danang are seeking to rescue a pig-tailed monkey trapped in a snare.

According to a Son Tra-Ngu Hanh Son Forest Rangers representative, the monkey was trapped in a snare around its right front leg in the Suoi Da area.

He added that the monkey was not native to the peninsula and was believed to have been released into the wild after being kept as a pet. Over time, it likely joined a group of macaques searching for food.

Over the past four days, forest rangers and rescue volunteers have attempted to approach the monkey but failed as it moved deeper into the forest.

The monkey can still walk and climb trees, so it runs away when it sees people coming with a net.

Authorities are considering using tranquillizer darts to rescue the monkey. If that method fails, they will use a net to capture it. They have also contacted animal rescue experts to find a way to help the monkey.

Thanh Truc, an animal rescue staff member in Son Tra, said that the monkey's three toes, tightly caught in the snare, show signs of necrosis.

The snare is about 10 centimetres wide and has a serrated design. Once trapped, the prey has little chance of escaping; even if it does, it will likely struggle with severe injuries.
