Rare animal species found in Quang Nam elephant sanctuary

A variety of rare animal species have been discovered in the Elephant Habitat and Species Conservation Area in the central province of Quang Nam.

According to Mai Van Duong, director of the Quang Nam Elephant Habitat and Species Conservation Area, as many as eight elephants, along with several rare species listed in the Red Book, including the gray-shanked douc langur, red-shouldered pheasant, and white pheasant, have been detected in the area through camera traps.

The sanctuary spans a total area of 19,000 hectares across the districts of Que Lam and Que Son.

The elephant herd at the sanctuary is regarded as one of the last remaining populations of the endangered Asian elephant species in Quang Nam.

The Quang Nam Elephant Habitat and Species Conservation Area is home to 215 vertebrate species, including 32 mammal species, 134 bird species, 28 reptile species, and 21 amphibian species. Notably, the yellow-striped snake has recently been recorded in the area.

In 2024, approximately 230 patrols were conducted in the area, uncovering five violations of the Forestry Law and one case of illegal wildlife hunting. The forest protection teams removed 1,297 snares, 42 traps, and dismantled 16 illegal camps.

The violations have been handed over to local authorities for handling in line with legal regulations.
