Children born with cleft palates get help

Operation Smile Vietnam partnered with Vietnam Cuba Friendship Hospital to provide free treatment for children born with cleft lip and palate deformities.

Operation Smile Vietnam has provided free surgeries to over 14,000 children

The programme, with the sponsorship of British Embassy in Hanoi, offered the treatment for cleft lip and other palate deformities for 60-65 children from Son La, Yen Bai, Thanh Hoa provinces from March 16-18.

The patients also received assistance with transportation and food expenses during their stay at the hospitals.

This was the first time British Embassy in Hanoi joined Operation Smile’s mission to give these life-changing surgeries to children in Vietnam. The total amount of financial support is about £11,000 (USD17,765).

Mr. Nguyen Viet Phuong, Chief Representative of Operation Smile in Vietnam said, Vietnam has an estimated 3,000 babies born each year with with cleft lips or palate deformities, adding Operation Smile Vietnam has provided free surgeries to over 14,000 children thanks to donor’s financial support.

In the coming years, Operation Smile Vietnam has set a target to treat 2,500-3,000 children each year.
