Nguyen Thi Bich Chi, 41, lives in a remote area in Nui Thanh District which frequently faces flooding during the rainy season.

With unstable income from a small rice field which is often devastated by bad weather, Chi has been struggling to raise her two disabled children for over 20 years.

"Our family depends mostly on my husband, but he's only earning a very modest income from doing odd jobs for other people in the area," Chi said. "Meanwhile, I couldn't help much as I spend most of my time taking care of the children."

While giving gentle massaging to her two children who were lying on an old bed, Chi said that her son Nguyen Van Lanh is 22 years old now and the daughter Nguyen Thi Diem is 20.

"Lanh was born looking normal but when seeing him unable to move properly at five months, we took him to hospital where doctors said that he faced myasthenia gravis and needed physiotherapy. We sought treatment at several hospitals but his situation didn't improve. And Diem was born with the same problem as her brother. Due to financial difficulties, we’ve been unable to seek better treatment for them."

The two children have had to depend on their parents on all daily activities over the past 20 years.

Chi said she was shocked when informed last year by doctors that she had thyroid cancer.

"My health has deteriorated and I'm very worried about the day when I can’t take care of my children," she said.

Vice chairman of Tam Thanh Commune People's Committee, Nguyen Thanh Luu, said that Chi's family were facing lots of difficulties as three members have health problems.

"We've also raised funds to help them but they need more support to overcome difficulties," the official said.
