Mai and her two classmates are lucky as they don't have to leave their families to attend school on the mainland like their brothers and sisters.
Her first primary class was launched in the 2023-2024 school year at the Hoa Phong Ba Kindergarten and Primary School. Besides three first-grade students, the school has 11 kindergarten children.
According to teacher Nguyen Thi Be, the students here are mostly children of fishermen and military officers based on the island.
"We're just a small community on the country's smallest island with a total area of just 2.30 square kilometres," the teacher said. "Most of the residents are still very poor so the children lack basic conditions. But we're very happy to have been able to open the first class for primary students here so that they no longer have to live far from their parents for schooling."

Another teacher, Le Thi Thuy Linh, added that due to a lack of study equipment and environment, most of the students are very shy.
"We've faced shortages of teaching tools, study equipment as well as toys for students," the teacher said. "Besides, they also need healthcare equipment. We hope to receive support from the community to further develop the school on the island."
One of the mothers, Nguyen Thi Hoai, said that she was very happy that her daughter and other children could study right on the island. "We're fishing and our lives are still very difficult," Hoai said. "We used to be very worried when having to leave our small children as we couldn't visit them often."
The woman said that it usually takes them over an hour to get to the mainland by boat. However, travelling to the mainland was impossible during bad weather.
"We've adapted to life here," she said. "But we hope that our children will have a better life than us."
