1,000 patients given free hearing aids

The Starkey Hearing Foundation gave free check-ups and hearing aids to more than 1,000 patients in the central and Central Highlands regions on May 1 and 2.

US-based Starkey Hearing Foundation, Hoan My Danang Hospital, Danang Volunteer and VinaCapital Foundation organised the event.

42 doctors from Starkey Hearing Missions arrived in Hy Vong Village, Danang City to provide health check-ups and hearing aids to 1,000 people from Quang Ngai, Quang Nam, Danang, Gia Lai and Thua Thien-Hue provinces.

Many of the patients were children and elderly people with disadvantaged backgrounds. Hearing aids cost around VND5m (USD220) to VND10m. The custom earmoulds, battery and aftercare service for each patient is VND5m.

During the event, doctors and patients exchanged opinions of hearing loss treatments. The patients were also given medicines for some ear complaints.

The Starkey Hearing Foundation will continue to provide 500 more heading aids to people in Hanoi and HCM City this year.

Megan Baiocchi, the International Development Director for Asia-Pacific of Starkey Foundation, said according to the World Health Organisation, more than 360 million people had disabling hearing loss, with the majority of them living in developing countries. 3% of them can't afford hearing aids and necessary medical services.
