Tran Cong Tuan, 47, from Do Luong District, is being treated at the National Institute of Burns in Hanoi and has regained consciousness after a long coma. He is now lying motionless with his eyes staring unblinkingly at the ceiling.

According to Tuan's wife, Thai Thi Chinh, on May 29, while working at a construction site near high-voltage power lines, he suddenly received an electric shock. He fell to the ground with the clothes burning like a torch.

"When taking my husband to a local hospital, we didn't have any money at home. Our kind-hearted neighbours donated VND5 million (USD146.46) to help us. Tuan's condition was critical, so he was quickly sent to the National Institute of Burn in Hanoi," Chinh said.

The family primarily depends on Tuan's modest monthly income and farming.

Dr Hoang Van Vu from the Intensive Care Unit of the National Burn Hospital stated that up to around 22 per cent of Tuan's body had been burnt severely, including his face, neck, torso and limbs. He has undergone mechanical ventilation and intensive care.

Tuan has experienced two surgeries to amputate both legs and his right arm, causing him great pain.

The doctor added that Tuan's treatment would be lengthy and costly, and his family were too poor to pay for it.
